Test Requirements

• For an Introductory / Discovery Flight
• For piloting an Ultralight Powered Parachute
• To get your Student Certificate (to begin formal training for a Sport or Private Pilot)

Requirements for a Introductory / Discovery Flight in a Powered Parachute

To take a Introductory flight in a Powered Parachute, you must be able to breathe on your own, and SMILE!

Tests Requirements for Piloting an ULTRALIGHT Powered Parachute
There are no formal FAA required tests to pilot an Ultralight Powered Parachute. However, as part of the SkyTrails Training Program, in order to obtain our Training Certificate (i.e., endorsement for meeting a standard of safety) for piloting an Ultralight PPC – and passing our 4-day Ultralight course, the pilot must…

Have passed a PreSolo knowledge test
Have completed their Solo Cross-Country Flight
And performed an Engine Out landing


Tests Requirements to get your Student Certificate
Unless you have a medical certificate, then you must have passed your State Driving License exam – to fulfill the medical requirements to exercise the privilege of flying solo with your Student Certificate. But there are no other FAA required tests to obtain a Student ticket. Please note that SkyTrails is also one of the few Training Programs that can complete your application for Student Pilot; as we have a full-time Examiner on staff. Otherwise, you may have to visit the FAA or a FSDO (Flight Service District Office) to obtain your Student Certificate.

Tests required to complete a Sport Pilot Rating in a Powered Parachute
Tests required to complete your SP rating are…
Have passed a PreSolo knowledge test; with a Logbook endorsement
Received at least a 70% score on your PPCL Sport Pilot Knowledge Test from a FAA testing center (noting that normally, many rural Community Colleges can give this test).
Successfully completed your PPC Practical Test.  This test is a combination of an ‘open-book’ oral questions session, followed by a Flight & field test.

Tests required to complete a Private Rating in a Powered Parachute
Tests required to complete your Private rating in a PPC are…
Have passed a PreSolo knowledge test; with a Logbook endorsement
Received at least a 70% score on your Private Pilot for PPC Knowledge Test from a FAA testing center (noting that normally, many rural Community Colleges can give this test).
Successfully completed your Private Practical Test. This test is more demanding and more detailed than a SP test, but it is still a combination of an ‘open-book’ oral questions session, followed by a Flight & field test.


Tests required to complete a CFI Rating in a Powered Parachute
Tests required to complete your Private rating in a PPC are…
Have a current Sport Pilot certificate
Received at least a 70% score on TWO Knowledge Tests from a FAA testing center (noting that normally, many rural Community Colleges can give this test).

           - The FOI (Fundamentals of Instruction) Knowledge Test, and…
           - a CFI Knowledge Test
Successfully completed your CFI Practical Test. 
This test is FAR more demanding (up to 5-hours) and requires more comprehensive explanations than a SP or PP test, but it is still a combination of an ‘open-book’ oral questions session, followed by a Flight & field test.
